Challenges in the Classroom

The purpose of this blog is to discuss the challenges educators face teaching 21'st Century skills to our students.  Some things to consider (at home and school) in this discussion are
  • Types of technology
  • Availability of technology
  • Accessibility of techology
  • Student skills
  • Teacher training
  • Administrative support
  • NETS Standards/Standard Course of Study
  • Integrating technology
To begin this discussion - in terms of technology, what is the greatest challenge you face in the classroom?

  1. Well, my kids are 4 and they are still very excited about learning. The biggest problem I run in to is actually teaching the kids how to use the technology I have available. I have to go back to the very basics and teach simple skills like how to use the mouse. I'm lucky in that my kids want to learn and once they gain the basic skills they need to use the technology in the classroom we are off and running. The challenge is getting them to the point where they can use the technology independently. With such young chidlren, this can take a considerable amount of time.

  4. Amanda: One of the challenges I will face is making sure my teens are on task when constructing their post. I'm also interested to find out how well they communicate with eachother. I'm hoping they come up with something more than "ditto!"

  5. The greatest challenge or one of them is keeping students focused when introducing a new concept. sometimes students get a little unfocused and/or silly which I guess indicates that students are having fun?

  6. Currently, in my situation, I do not have any computers in my classroom for student use. In addition, because I am a K-2 teacher I do not have use of the portable computer lab - it is only being used for grades 3 - 5. Our computer lab and my classroom was damaged in the recent tornado so right now everything is challenging!

  7. I get frustrated when the technology piece isn't functioning properly. In most cases when something stops working I don't have the knowledge to fix it and it takes a while for technology technicians to attend to the problem.
